Damaged Materials Policy


The purpose of this policy is to establish procedures for the disposal of circulating library materials that are damaged beyond repair and paid for by library users.

Identification of Damaged Materials

Damaged items exist when material is returned to the library after being damaged while checked out to the customer. Library materials returned to the library damaged so it cannot be used again will be withdrawn from the library collection. Example of damage includes:
  • Books with pages stuck together
  • Items with corners chewed
  • Mold or mildew
  • Pages torn out or missing
  • Wet items due to spills
  • Discs that are cracked or severely scratched
  • Cases damaged beyond wear and tear
Customers are charged a replacement fee for the item; material belongs to the Town of Flower Mound and the borrower is responsible for Town property while it is in their possession.
