How do you determine billed usage on large water meters 1.5" through 4"?

When billing meters 1.5" through 4", our billing software uses a multiplier of 10 to calculate usage. The meters in this size group register consumption down to 100s of gallons, unlike the smaller meters. Our billing software can only bill up to a seven-digit read, and, therefore, a multiplier has to be used.

The meter box lids are not locked down, and you have full access to the meter at any time to verify the meter information, including a meter reading.

The Town has two types of readouts on its water meters, analog (ProRead and ProCoder) and digital (E-Coder).

ProRead Meters (Analog)

ProRead meters have six moving dials and two fixed zeros. The fixed zeros represent the 10s of gallons and gallon dial. For meters in this size category, Town bills are based on 100s of gallons. You must include both fixed zeros on the meter reading to ensure that you are reading your meter correctly.

Below is an example of an Analog (ProRead) style meter readout. Please click here for an example of a ProRead/E-Coder resolution readout.

ProCoder Meters (Analog)

ProCoder meters have eight moving dials and no fixed zeros. For meters in this size category, Town bills are based on 100s of gallons. You must replace the seven and eight dials with zeros to ensure that you are reading your meter correctly.

E-Coder Meters (Digital)

E-Coder meters have nine moving dials and no fixed zeros. For meters in this size category, Town bills are based on 100s of gallons. You must replace the seven and eight dial with zeros and drop any remaining digits to the right of the eight dial. This will ensure that you are reading the meter correctly.

Billing Example (December Through January Billing Cycle)

  • 623,500 (November reading) - 626,050 (December reading) = 2,550 X 10 = 25,500 gallons
  • 626,050 (December reading) - 639,600 (January reading) = 13,550 X 10 = 135,500 gallons

Due to the meter size and the billing system's limitation of only showing seven digit reads, the system has to multiply larger meters that register in 100-gallon increments by 10.
