Keyhole Markup Language (KML) is an XML file format used for modeling and storing geographical features such as points, polygons, lines, and images for display in Google Earth, Microsoft Virtual Earth, Google Maps, ESRI ArcGIS Explorer, NASA WorldWind, and other mapping software. KML is processed by these programs in a similar fashion to HTML by a Web browser. KML files can be created using dedicated software or written in their raw form using nothing more than a text editor such as Notepad.
The Town of Flower Mound utilizes KML files to provide mapping information to its residents using Google Earth or a similar viewer. KML files are also used to create online maps on the Web site and in the future may be used to create applications combining maps with other data such as images or file downloads.
KML files can be downloaded at http://www.flower-mound.com/gis/gis_data.php. GIS has made available several data sets including parks, parcels, schools, and Town facilities.
