The Citizen Police Academy is a 11-week class that explores the inner workings of the Flower Mound Police Department. Some of the topics that are covered during the course include recruitment and personnel, training, Patrol Division, Criminal Investigations Division, Narcotics, K-9, School Resource Officer, Firearms, Traffic Division and SWAT. The class provides both informational and hands-on learning of law enforcement. The class meets one evening a week from 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. and two Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. in the Police Department’s training room. To attend the Flower Mound Police Department Citizen Police Academy, you must meet certain criteria and complete the necessary application and release forms. A criminal history and brief background investigation will be conducted on each applicant. The applicant must be at least 18 years old, live within the Town of Flower Mound and have not been convicted of a Class B misdemeanor or higher criminal offense. After review of the application and background investigation, the Chief of Police reserves the right to deny any applicant admission to the Citizen Police Academy. Each applicant will be notified of his/her acceptance to the upcoming class by either electronic or postal mail. After completing the course you will be invited to become part of the Flower Mound Police Department Citizen Police Academy Alumni Association. The Alumni Association conducts activities with and for the Police Department throughout the year. Due to high demand for the academy, it is recommended to apply early to reserve a seat.

The Flower Mound Police Department is hosting two sessions of the Junior Police Academy this summer for students who will enter the eighth grade in the fall of 2010. The sessions will be held from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. June 21 - 25 and August 2 - 6 at the Flower Mound Police Department, 4150 Kirkpatrick Lane. The free academy is designed to motivate young people, enhance leadership skills, and encourage community participation. The JPA transforms the traditional role of the police officer into one of mentor and friend while motivating participants to be outstanding citizens through law enforcement education. The program will provide students with an extensive tour of the Police Department and presentations on drug recognition and enforcement, criminal investigation, K-9, traffic stops. In addition, the SWAT team will conduct a live exercise incorporating the academy students. Space is limited and all students must be pre-registered.
