The Flower Mound Fire Department has recently experienced a significant increase in carbon monoxide emergency calls, many associated with residents’ newly-installed roofs. It is crucial for residents who recently had their roof replaced to ensure all vents from water heaters and heating/air conditioning equipment have been properly re-connected. Residents are urged to contact their plumbing or heating/air conditioning professional for an inspection to avoid potential injury from carbon monoxide poisoning.
According to Town ordinances, a permit must be obtained prior to installing a new roof. Homeowners can confirm a permit has been acquired through the Building and Inspections Services Department at 972.874.6355 or ask the roofer to post the permit on a front window before starting. When the job is complete and the contractor requests a final inspection, a Town Inspector will conduct an attic inspection to ensure all vent pipes are properly connected. It is always a good idea to withhold final payment until proof of an approved final inspection can be verified.
Residents are also encouraged to install a CO detector in the home which, along with smoke alarms, provides a life safety warning. CO detectors should not be installed within 15 feet of heating or cooking appliances or within proximity to humid areas such as bathrooms. CO poisoning symptoms include a headache, dizziness, weakness, nausea, vomiting, chest pain, and confusion. If you suspect CO poisoning, get to fresh air immediately and call 9-1-1.
