In honor of their outstanding bravery in an emergency situation, Flower Mound Firefighters Gus Trujillo and Capt. John Wright were awarded the Liberty Mutual Firemark Award on Dec. 20 at Central Fire Station in Flower Mound. This prestigious award is given annually to firefighters throughout the country who best represent their communities through courageous acts and have demonstrated the firefighter’s selfless spirit.
In June, Capt. John Wright and Firefighter Gus Trujillo responded to a residential house fire. While conducting a search on the home’s second floor, Wright and Trujillo became disoriented by the rapidly – spreading fire and were unable locate an exit. Capt. Wright recognized the gravity of the situation and made a “mayday” call to his fellow firefighters, marking the first “mayday” call in the history of the Flower Mound Fire Department. After the mayday was called, Firefighter Trujillo located two small windows, crawled onto the roof, and pulled Capt. Wright to safety, seconds before the room was engulfed in flames.
Used as a last-resort, mayday calls are often not made in time to save a life. After their experience, both men launched a campaign to encourage other firefighters to make a mayday call when necessary, before it’s too late. As local Liberty Mutual Firemark Award winners, Wright and Trujillo will be considered for the 2011 Liberty Mutual National Firemark Award. Two national winners will be chosen in March – one honored for heroism, the other for community service/public education – and will receive a $10,000 grant for their fire departments.
