Two Flower Mound first responders were recently honored at the Heroes of Denton County annual banquet. Flower Mound Firefighter Gustavo Trujillo and Telecommunications Officer Katrina Williams were named Heroes of Denton County Firefighter of the Year and Communications Officer of the Year, respectively.
Gustavo Trujillo was honored for his outstanding bravery. While responding to a residential house fire in June, John Wright and Firefighter Trujillo became overrun by fire on the second floor. The rapidly increasing fire disorientated them and they became lost in the room, forcing Wright to give a “mayday” call to his fellow firefighters. After the mayday was called, Firefighter Trujillo located two small windows on the wall opposite of where the fire had broken through the wall. Once Trujillo had crawled out onto the roof, he was able to also save Wright, whose situation had become critical. Both men made a narrow escape, seconds before the room was engulfed in flames.
The other Flower Mound first responder honored at the banquet is Katrina Williams, who works behind the scenes, going above and beyond the call of duty when assisting with an emergency situation. Williams is a humble, compassionate telecommunications officer, who is both professional and efficient. Her quickness to warn fellow first responders when they are approaching a potentially dangerous situation has been invaluable. Since joining the police department in 2006, Katrina has been a model employee and an asset to the Town of Flower Mound.
