Flower Mound Voters approved a quarter-cent dedicated sales tax in November 2007 for the maintenance and reconstruction of existing Town streets. Since that time, the Town Council, administration, and Infrastructure department have utilized revenue created by the dedicated sales tax and general fund monies to repair and maintain more than 30 local Flower Mound roads without requiring an increase in the ad valorem property tax rate.
Whether it be on a regional commute to work or a local drive to the grocery store, most Flower Mound residents utilize the town’s thoroughfare system on a daily basis. Understanding the positive impact that transportation improvements can have on our daily lives, the Flower Mound Town Council and staff continue to make mobility one of the highest priority topics for the Town to address.
The Town has allocated more than $3.5 million in dedicated sales tax dollars since 2007 for road reconstruction projects on Churchill Drive, College Parkway, Dover Drive, Flower Mound Road (FM 2499 to Old Settlers), Homestead Street, Hamlett Drive, Sagebrush Drive, and Savannah Court. Over $2 million in general fund monies have been used to make repairs or improvements that include slurry seals, asphalt overlays, and concrete repair on Cannongate Drive, Colonial Drive, Colonial Place, Colony Street, Elmwood Drive, Forest Vista Drive, Fuqua Drive, Furlong Drive West, Gregory, Hamlett Lane, Lake Bluff Drive, Lake Forest Drive, McPherson Lane, North Park, Northshore Boulevard, Ranch, Red Rock, Ryans Place, Savannah Court, Sagebrush Drive, Shiloh Road North, Shiloh Road South, Shorecrest, Skillern Boulevard, Sweetwater, and Timber Creek Road. In addition, the general fund monies are also used for other day-to-day street maintenance and operation activities Town-wide.
A carefully-planned thoroughfare system contributes to the overall quality of life in a community by providing the most efficient routes possible and safely reducing drive times. Well-maintained roads also contribute to the safety of a commute and create less wear and tear on a vehicle. Flower Mound voters will have the opportunity to reauthorize the street maintenance and reconstruction dedicated sales tax in November 2011.
This is the third story in a series focusing on the Town of Flower Mound's four dedicated sales taxes and the benefits they provide the community. The Town's sales tax of 2 percent, including the four one-quarter cent dedicated sales taxes, is consistent with that of other municipalities in North Texas. The total sales tax rate in Flower Mound is 8.25 percent, including 6.25 percent of state sales tax.
