Flower Mound Police DepartmentThe Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) recently published the annual “Crime in the United States” report, which identified the Town of Flower Mound for having numerous favorable rankings. Most notably, the Town was ranked as having the second lowest crime rate in the United States and the lowest in Texas within the Town’s population category, based upon the overall number of reported crimes per resident.

The agency cites Flower Mound as having the lowest ranking in the State of Texas categories of Crime Rate per Population, Total Reported Crime, Violent Crime, and Property Crime. In addition to the positive state rankings, Flower Mound also ranked favorably on a national comparison with the fourth lowest Property Crime Rate and the fifth lowest Total Reported Crime Rate, within the respective population category.

The data also indicates that when evaluated based upon a percentage of reported crimes per resident, the Town of Flower Mound reports significantly fewer offenses than the average of other cities within its respective Texas population group in several major categories. Flower Mound reported 87% fewer motor vehicle thefts, 82% less violent crime, 80% fewer property crimes, and 81% less total crime per person than the average of all municipalities of comparable population.

The Flower Mound Police Department credits improved response times, staffing and patrol improvements funded through the dedicated crime control sales tax, the placement of additional officers on the streets, an increased number of police beats, a dedicated staff, and the assistance of department volunteers for all contributing to the positive crime rate rankings.

“This latest information confirms what Flower Mound residents have known for a long time - that we have one of the finest police departments in the country,” said Melissa Northern, Town of Flower Mound Mayor. “Their dedication and service make Flower Mound one of the safest communities to work, raise a family, and call home.”

The report compiles 2009 crime statistics as reported by offense, region, state, and local agency, and ranks Flower Mound within the group of municipalities that have a population of 50,000 – 99,999 residents. The “Crime in the United States” Report is based upon the Uniform Crime Report (UCR) program, a nationwide, statistical endeavor of nearly 18,000 municipal, educational, county, state, tribal, and federal law enforcement agencies that voluntarily provide data on reported crimes.

In 2009, law enforcement agencies reporting to the UCR Program represented more than 295 million U.S. citizens, or 96.3 percent of the total population. The 2009 report compiles statistics on 646 Texas cities. Nationally, Flower Mound’s population category accounts for 32.6 million people. The Town is listed as the 45th largest reporting Texas municipality and the 13th largest reporting municipality within the population group.
