Once a year, the Town of Flower Mound calculates residential water usage to determine residents’ sewer rates for the following year. The new sewer rate will be based on the average water usage during the months of December, January, and February. The procedure begins with water consumption reading between Nov. 15 and March 10. Below is a chart to determine when your sewer rate will be calculated. The actual read date may occur two to four days prior to the billing date. If your account number begins with:
6 – it will be read from 11/15 through 2/15
7 – it will be read from 11/20 through 2/20
8 – it will be read from 11/25 through 2/25
3 – it will be read from 12/01 through 3/01
4 – it will be read from 12/05 through 3/05
5 – it will be read from 12/10 through 3/10
The minimum sewer rate is $17.25 for usage from zero through two thousand gallons of water. An additional $3.44 per thousand gallon unit is billed for water usage over 2,000 gallons. Before and during this three month averaging period, residents are encouraged to be aware of water consumption, be conservative with water usage, and check for any possible water leaks. The best way to check for water leaks is to take a reading of the meter during a six to eight-hour period when water is not being used. After the six to eight-hour period, take the reading again. The reading should remain the same if you did not use any water. If the reading is higher, this indicates a water leak is present somewhere. Problem areas this test will not detect are toilets that hang and run at odd times, and broken sprinkler heads that only leak when your sprinkler system is in operation. Small leaks such as a leaking faucet and a leaking toilet can waste up to 180 gallons of water each day, or 5,000 gallons per month. This consumption will not only increase a water bill during this averaging period, but will also raise the sewer rates for the next year.
