A Flower Mound wastewater lift station overflowed wastewater and rainwater between 10:25 a.m. and 12:50 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 8, after heavy rains and flooding caused a power outage that affected the Kirkpatrick Lift Station. The lift station is located at 5201 Kirkpatrick and spilled wastewater into an adjacent storm drainage channel that travels east through Lewisville, and ultimately into the Elm Fork of the Trinity River.
Flower Mound estimates that approximately 165,000 gallons of wastewater was released. The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) requires all wastewater overflows in excess of 100,000 gallons to be reported to TCEQ, the public, and other designated public officials.
No public drinking water supplies were threatened or contaminated by this overflow. Its impact was minimized by large quantitites of storm water that served to dilute thewastewater prior to reachingthe Elm Fork of the Trinity River.
During heavy rain events such as those recently experienced in the North Texas area, it is common for storm water flooding to negatively impact utility infrastructure, including electrical service. Electrical service to the lift station was restored as storm water receded and allowed utility crews to make repairs.
