Tornado Safety Tips

Spring and summer are considered tornado season in Texas. Tornados can happen at any time of day but are most likely to occur between 3 and 9 p.m. The tips below will help keep you and your family safe in case of a tornado.

  • In a home or building move to a pre-designated shelter such as an interior room or hallway on the lowest floor. And get under a sturdy piece of furniture.

  • Stay away from windows.

  • Don’t try to outrun a tornado in your car.

  • Mobile homes should always be abandoned.

  • If no shelter is available, get out of your vehicle and find the most low-lying area such as a ditch or ravine and lay flat on your stomach and cover your head with your hands.

  • When a tornado watch or warning has been issued, look out for dark, often greenish sky, a wall cloud, large hail, and a loud roar, similar to a train.

For more information, call 972.874.6270.

For more information, see the Severe Weather and Outdoor Warning Siren Information page.

Wild About Flower Mound Festival Rescheduled

The Town of Flower Mound and the Flower Mound Chamber of Commerce announced today that the 2008 Wild About Flower Mound Festival has been rescheduled for spring 2009.

A partnership between the Town and the Chamber of Commerce, the festival was previously planned for May 9 and 10. While the local and regional community responded to the festival enthusiastically with numerous sponsorships and volunteer offers, organizers have rescheduled the festival in response to the current economic climate and the fiscal exposure both entities would incur. Organizers are confident a rescheduled date will further ensure a successful first-year event for a festival with no history of established support or attendance.

"The mutual decision to reschedule the festival was made by the Town and the Chamber of Commerce to allow ample resources to be dedicated to the event’s success," said Mayor Jody Smith. "The goal for everybody involved is to ensure the highest quality festival possible for our community.”

The Town of Flower Mound has a duty to thoroughly scrutinize the use of taxpayer dollars when considering an event and the Chamber of Commerce is charged with responsibly serving its members and the business community. Leaders of both entities have met on several occasions recently to discuss the potential fiscal exposure and they mutually elected to consider a date in the future that will further guarantee the production of a superior event.

“Working together on this event has further strengthened the partnership between the Chamber of Commerce and our town leaders,” said Lori Walker, Flower Mound Chamber of Commerce Chairman of the Board. “We’re confident we will be able host a festival next year that will make all Flower Mound residents and businesses proud.”

A committee of representatives from both entities has moved forward in planning and scheduling the future Wild About Flower Mound Festival. A new date will be mutually announced once the next festival season has been thoroughly reviewed and considered. The Town of Flower Mound and the Chamber of Commerce thank the sponsors who have committed financial support to the festival and the individuals who dedicated their time and talents to organizing the event. Leaders from both entities have expressed excitement about the support the event garnered and are looking forward to hosting an event next year that will be a success for all involved.

Flower Mound Resident Wins National Competition – Money Donated to the Town

The Town of Flower Mound’s parks system will soon receive a boost from a resident who won a national competition and a well-known beauty care product company.

Flower Mound resident Kim Chance entered Pantene’s Beautiful Wishes contest and won $5,000 that will go towards enhancing Flower Mound’s parks system. The contest encourages women to enter a wish for their community and life on Pantene’s Web site. Chance’s awarding-winning wish is to create an educational park that is wheelchair accessible, uses natural materials to build interesting play equipment, and contains educational components.

“Creating a new park that incorporates nature and education will increase the amount of time children in this town and in neighboring towns spend outdoors,” said Chance.  "Spending time outdoors increases creativity and imagination, provides physical exercise, and fosters appreciation for the environment in which we live."

Flower Mound Town staff members have met with Chance and Pantene representatives regarding possible uses for the funds and are very grateful for the contribution. The donation could be used for undeveloped parkland projects, enhancing current parks, or other special park features.

“We are thrilled to receive this donation, and it will be put to good use,” said Bart Stevenson, Executive Director of Community Services. “Flower Mound residents truly love their Town, which is evident in Ms. Chance’s wish for her community.”

FMPD Motorized Scooter and Minibike Guidelines

The Flower Mound Police Department’s guidelines and restrictions regarding motorized scooters were created to ensure the safety and well being of scooter operators, pedestrians, and those driving other motorized vehicles. The FMPD defines a scooter as a device that has a least two wheels, a braking system, a deck designed to allow a person to stand or sit, and the ability to be propelled by human power alone. Most scooters have the appearance of a skateboard with handlebars and some have seats.

In accordance with state law, electric or motor operated scooters with motors that are 40 cubic centimeters (CC) or less are allowed on sidewalks and a street or highway with a posted speed limit of 35 miles per hour or less. Town Ordinance 54 (Sec. 54-72) prohibits scooters of any size from being operated on a Town park trail. Scooters with motors that are 40 cubic centimeters or less are not allowed to travel on a street with a posted speed limit of more than 35 miles per hour; however they are allowed to cross a street with a posted speed limit of more than 35 miles per hour.

Vehicles with a motor of more than 40 cubic centimeters are considered motorized vehicles and are not categorized as scooters. Vehicles with motors that exceed 40 cubic centimeters can be operated on a road with a speed limit of more than 35 miles per hour, but may not be operated on a sidewalk, a bike path, or a park trail. They also must meet the current state registration and licensing requirements that apply to all motorized vehicles.

A minibike or mini motorcycle has the appearance of a smaller version of a motorcycle. Research on these vehicles has shown that the majority have motors that exceed 40cc, are not legal for operation on the Town’s sidewalks, and must meet the current state registration and licensing guidelines for operation on a street or highway. A very limited number have been identified as having a motor smaller than 40cc.

FMPD research has shown that the majority of the scooters currently available have motors that are smaller than 40cc and are legal for operation on the Town’s sidewalks and streets. A limited number have been identified as having a motor larger than 40cc. When purchasing a scooter or Minibike for operation on the Town’s sidewalks and bike trails, please check the motor size to ensure it does not exceed 40cc in size. For more information regarding scooter law, please contact the Flower Mound Police Department at 972.539.0525.

Wildfire Threat Necessitates Burn Ban

Due to high winds, low humidity, and dormant vegetation creating a high risk of large and destructive wildfires in Flower Mound, the Fire Department is taking extra precaution to help prevent such an occurrence by continually evaluating environmental conditions. Until further notice, open burning is not permitted.

Only gas and charcoal grills that have lids should be used for grilling. The lids must be used at all times. Additionally, charcoal grills must have a five foot radius from any combustible material. Outdoor fireplaces or fire pits must be fueled by natural gas or propane, and no combustibles such as wood, leaves, or brush should be used for burning.

Under any condition, open burning can only be conducted with a burn permit obtained through the Flower Mound Fire Marshal’s office.  A permit for welding and hot work must also be obtained prior to work being preformed. Residents possessing a burn permit must contact the Fire Marshal’s office at 972.874.6207 or Police Dispatch at 972.539.0525 to obtain daily burn status. It has been reported that a large number of grass fires that are started along rural thoroughfares or highways burning hundreds of acres are often ignited by a discarded cigarette.  The Fire Department would like to request that those who smoke please discard smoking materials responsibly. For more information, call the Flower Mound Fire Marshal at 972.874.6207.

FMPD Community Announcement

The Flower Mound Police Department is aware of several emails that are circulating throughout Flower Mound regarding attempted abductions that were reported last weekend.  A summary of the reported incidents and the information provided to the Flower Mound Police Department by the complainants is provided below:

  • FMPD officers responded to Flamingo Drive at 6:17 p.m. on Friday, January 11 where it was reported that a white male driving a white panel van stopped and said “hey” to an 8-year-old child while she was riding her bike.  The little girl was frightened and ran to tell her mother.  The driver did not exit the van and drove away.

  • FMPD officers responded to Summertime Trail (Lewisville) at 6:51 pm on Friday, January 11 where it was reported that a 12-year-old was riding his skateboard near the intersection of Garden Ridge @ Forest Vista (Flower Mound) when a “Hispanic female with long reddish hair and smoking a cigarette” driving a grey or silver 4-door-car stopped, rolled down the window, and asked the child if he needed a ride.  The boy was frightened and went to tell his mother.  The driver did not exit the vehicle and drove away.

Additionally, there has also been an email circulating about a white male wearing a green sweater approaching children near Stone Hill Farms.  The individual apparently asked the children if they had seen a lost kitten.  This incident was not directly reported to the Flower Mound Police and there is no information that individual made any overt movements. Other than timing and proximity, there does not yet appear to be a connection between these events.  Even though some emails may indicate that individuals have attempted to “grab” the children, no such reports were made to the police department.  The Flower Mound Police Department Criminal Investigations Division is reviewing each report and officers continue to patrol the areas. The Flower Mound Police Department would like to remind residents to always remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to the police. The Flower Mound Police Department can be contacted at:

Town of Flower Mound Kicks off New Year With Unveiling of Redesigned Web Site

Redesigned Front PageA new year often yields fresh goals, perspectives, and objectives. In Flower Mound, the transition from 2007 to 2008 also brings with it the unveiling of a redesigned Web site and a new era of communications for the Town’s residents and stakeholders.

Flower Mound’s Web site was last redesigned in 2002. Since that time, the design has been modified, but not totally redesigned, with new digital technologies, Internet standards, and trends. The Town’s Community Affairs Division began an extensive redesign process in May 2007 to evaluate the then current site, identify potential areas of improvement, and study new style developments that will allow the site to better serve Flower Mound residents as well as external visitors.

The redesign process included several steps designed to generate input and direction from a variety of audiences. Initial conceptual discussions began with Flower Mound’s Communication Committee and more than 20 meetings with various departmental and divisional representatives to review and evaluate individual pages. In addition, a content survey was posted on the Web site and usability studies were conducted with a variety of groups, including members of the Seniors In Motion program and the Youth Action Council, that allowed staff to observe navigation and informational access from numerous perspectives.

Significant design changes include a revision of the front page to a more informational layout, a consistent design to all internal departmental pages, and a consolidation of email addresses and phone numbers that will allow the town to be more responsive. Navigational links were repackaged in an audience-specific format and redundancy was encouraged when beneficial to ensure Web site visitors have easy access to the information they are seeking no matter how they surf the site. Staff received a considerable amount of feedback regarding the Town Calendar and search engine, and both were updated to be more informational and user-friendly.

Flower Mound’s redesigned Web site will continually be improved and updated. We welcome your comments and input. Please feel free to contact the Community Affairs Division at 972.874.6075 or webmaster@flower-mound.com.

FMFD Offers Life-Saving Winter Safety Tips

The winter months and cold temperatures are fast approaching, and so too is the risk of house fires. With the increasing cost of fuel, families will seek alternative methods to heat their homes, which can potentially be dangerous. The Flower Mound Fire Department has provided information below on ways to keep you and your family safe this winter season.

Heating Equipment

According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), heating equipment is the second leading cause of home fires in the United States. NFPA research shows that heating equipment was involved in an estimated 62,000 reported home fires in 2005, which resulted in approximately 700 deaths and 1,500 injuries. To help reduce the risk of home heating fires, the Flower Mound Fire Department has provided several simple steps to follow:

  • Keep a three-foot space between all heating equipment and anything that can burn.
  • Do not use an oven to heat your home.
  • Inspect and maintain heating equipment regularly for safety.
  • Turn off portable space heaters every time you leave the room and before going to bed.
  • Have your chimney inspected each year and cleaned if needed.
  • Use a sturdy fireplace screen.
  • Allow ashes to cool before disposing. Dispose of ashes in a metal container.

Carbon Monoxide – The Silent Killer

Often called a silent killer, Carbon Monoxide (CO) is an invisible, odorless, colorless gas created when fuels, such as gasoline, wood, coal, natural gas, propane, oil and methane, burn incompletely. Hundreds of people die each year from unintentional CO poisoning. Fire departments responded to an estimated 61,000 CO incidents in 2005. CO enters the body through breathing, and CO poisoning can be confused with flu symptoms, food poisoning and other illnesses. Some symptoms include shortness of breath, nausea, dizziness, light headedness or headaches. To decrease the risks of CO poisoning, the Flower Mound Fire Department has provided the following safety tips:

  • Do not use a range or oven to heat your home.
  • Install CO alarms inside your home to provide early warning of accumulating CO.
  • Have your heating equipment inspected by a professional every year before cold weather sets in.

For more information regarding home heating safety, please call the Flower Mound Fire Department at 972.874.6207.
