Town Awards and Recognitions

TATOA AwardThe Texas Association of Telecommunications Officers and Advisors (TATOA) honored Flower Mound’s FMTV with eight awards today at their annual conference. A first place programming award was presented for design of the FMTV bulletin board. Second place awards were presented for the 2009 Annual Report video, the Seniors In Motion program public service announcement, and the FMTV web site. And, third place honors were given to the 2010 Town Council Candidate Debate and the Flower Mound Employee Spotlight show as well as the Overall Excellence in Programming category. TATOA is a state-wide professional organization comprised of more than 125 information technology professionals, and government television programmers, regulators, and legal advisors representing more than 55 Texas cities and organizations. The Town of Flower Mound has earned a total of 15 TATOA awards.

CDGThe Town of Flower Mound was recently recognized as the most technologically advanced city in the nation in the population category of 30,000 to 74,999 by the Center for Digital Government (CDG). The CDG is the premier government technology watch group which tracks and monitors how cities are using technology to deliver services to their citizens. The rankings are based on a variety of factors including Web site features and services, network con­nectivity methods, data redundancy, network security, and other technological systems. Features including an increased Web presence with programs such as Facebook, Twitter, and Flickr, e-payments for utility bills and court fines, expanded disaster recovery to prevent loss of critical data and increase recovery times, and a comprehensive high-speed fiber optic system installed at new Town facilities contributed to the Town’s top ranking. The Town has received this prestigious award for the past six years; however, this marks the first top prize recognition.

The Texas Association of Telecommunications Officers and Advisors recently honored FMTV, Flower Mound’s Governmental access cable TV channel, with five awards. The state-wide competition recognizes governmental organizations that utilize cable channels to educate their residents with quality, informational programming. Flower Mound received a first place award for the Town’s FMTV Web site, two second place awards in the documentary and use of humor categories, and a third place award in the special audience category. The most significant honor was a second place recognition in the overall excellence category, which evaluates a channel’s entire video content program including the bulletin board, public service announcements, special event coverage, and reoccurring productions.

The Arbor Day Foundation has once again honored the Town with a Tree City USA designation recognizing Flower Mound’s progressive green program. Awarded to recognize the Town’s 2008 tree preservation efforts, the honor marks Flower Mound’s 15th consecutive year to receive the designation. Municipalities that receive the Tree City title are recognized for having a Tree Board, a Tree Ordinance, a forestry program, and an Arbor Day celebration.

Flower Mound was recently named the sixth best place to move to in the nation and number one in Texas by Forbes in the “America's 25 Best Places to Move” list. To locate America's best places to move, Forbes considered cities with populations of more than 25,000 and the number of people in each town who were born out of state or abroad, moved from a considerable distance within one and five years, and relocated for a job. Other factors included population growth, family incomes, people in executive and professional jobs, price, size, and age of homes, changes in school enrollments, and the proximity of multinational companies. The publication noted Flower Mound’s close proximity to DFW Airport, high percentage of adults with a bachelor’s degree or higher, and convenient access to global employers such as ExxonMobil, Stryker Corp., American Airlines, and Texas Instruments as factors in the high ranking.

The Texas Trails Network has awarded the Flower Mound Trails Master Plan with two prestigious designations, providing statewide recognition for the network of hike, bike, and equestrian trails.  Former Park Board Chair Mike McCall won the “Great Texas Trail Boss” service award for his leadership throughout the Trails Master Plan update in 2007. Former Director of Parks and Recreation Mel Rapp won the “Great Texas Trail Head” planning and design award for his original visionary plan of the Town’s pedestrian infrastructure.

The Texas Association of Municipal Information Officers (TAMIO) recently recognized Flower Mound with several awards designed to highlight exceptional governmental communication programs. The Town’s video annual report “Progress In Motion” was cited as an outstanding special or one-time program and the Town’s bi-monthly cable TV news program “The FMTV Update” was recognized as a finalist for exceptional achievement in regular or recurring programming.

North Texas Child magazine recently named Flower Mound its choice for top spot to raise a family in their December 2008 “Best for Families” rankings. Flower Mound was the only municipality highlighted in the article, which covered numerous child-related topics including kid-friendly dining establishments, retail shops, and family trips. The magazine noted the Town’s lovely neighborhoods, numerous parks and greenbelt areas, and impressive array of dining and arts options as appealing features. Additionally, the family-friendly Community Activity Center that offers swimming, classes, special events, and more contributed to the designation. 

D Magazine recently released the annual Dallas suburb ranking and listed Flower Mound among the top ten. When compiling the rankings, D Magazine considered a variety of factors including safety, education, housing, and ambiance and air. Flower Mound ranked number 10 and was specifically recognized for reasonably priced housing, recent commercial development, Parker Square’s diverse shopping opportunities, and the Town’s desire to protect the natural ambiance.

BusinessWeek Magazine rated Flower Mound a top 25 best affordable suburb in the South as part of its "America's Best Affordable Suburbs in the U.S. by Region."

D Magazine ranked Flower Mound the 8th best suburb in North Texas.

Flower Mound ranked 5th in the “Best Places to Raise Your Family/Top 100 Affordable Communities in the US” published by Frommer’s.

BusinessWeek.com listed Flower Mound as one of the Top 25 Best Affordable United States Suburbs and number one for the Dallas area.

Money magazine named Flower Mound the best small town [under 100,000] in Texas and the second best in the West.
