Burn Permits
Obtaining a Permit
To obtain a burn permit, call 972-.874.6270. Firefighters conduct inspections Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Return completed inspection forms to fire administration Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 12 noon and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. A permit will be issued at this time, and a fee of 75.00 will be collected. Burn permits are valid for 14 days, and may be extended 14 more days by calling 972.874.6270 prior to expiration date.

Permit Discontinuation
The chief or his authorized representative is authorized to require that open burning be immediately discontinued if it is determined that smoke emissions are offensive to occupants of surrounding property or if the open burning is determined to constitute a hazardous condition.

Permission
The person burning shall call the Fire Department Communications Center at 972.539.0525 prior to burning each day.

Open Burning Regulations
A fire is any amount of heat that can produce smoke or flame.Failure to comply with open burning regulations may result in the issuance of a citation and / or loss of future burning privileges. General regulations include:
  • Open burning shall be conducted as required by other governing agencies regulating emissions, i.e. Texas Natural Resource Conservation Commission.
  • Only natural materials shall be burned.
  • Applications for such approval shall only be presented by and permits therefore issued only to the owner of the land upon which the fire is to be kindled.
  • An open burning permit shall only be issued to a landowner who has at least five contiguous acres of land under their control, for which land the permit is sought.

Burn Day
Burn days are determined by the on-duty captain. Requirements for a burn day include:
  • Wind speed forecast of 10 miles per hour or less
  • Non Ozone Alert day
  • No burn ban in effect
  • No red flag or high hazard days

Clearances
Open burning is not permitted on lots less than 5 acres. Open burning shall not be conducted within 500 feet of any structure, property lines, or other combustible materials, i.e. trees, bushes, power lines, etc.

Pile Size

The burn pile shall be no larger than 5 feet in diameter and 5 feet in height.

Attendance
A competent adult shall continuously attend the burn pile until the fire is extinguished. This person shall have a garden hose connected to a water source or other approved fire extinguishing equipment readily available for use.

Hours
Hours of burning shall be confined to the hours of sunrise to sunset. All fires shall be extinguished before sunset.
