No permit is required for vinyl or painted or printed window or door signs that list the occupant name, logo, address, and business times as long as the combined sign area doesn’t exceed six square feet. Any other item that is attached to or hanging in the window or door is considered a window sign and must be permitted. Any sign that is not attached to the window is considered an “Interior Sign” and must be located 10 feet back from the window if it can be read from the outside. These interior signs do not require a permit. One neon “OPEN” sign may be placed in retail or commercial use areas as long as it doesn’t exceed 5 square feet, is non-intermittent and is no more than 2 colors. It does require a permit. Window signs are limited to 20 percent of the window area. The number of window areas per elevation and the 20 percent calculation for each is reviewed by the Building Inspections. For further information on sign permits, please contact the Building Inspection website or their main line at 972-874-6355.
